Brianna Denison

I'm not sure how many of you have heard about this story - but our community here in Reno has been hit hard by a tragedy. In late January, Brianna Denison, 19, was abducted from a home in the neighborhood next to campus. She grew up in Reno and was home visiting for winter break (she went to college in Santa Barbara). She had gone out with her friends to a concert and later that night slept on the couch in her friend's livingroom. The sliding glass door next to where she was sleeping had been left unlocked. In the morning when her friends woke up - Brianna was gone. Her cell phone and shoes were still there.

In the weeks that followed, the entire community seemed to rally in hopes of finding Brianna. I have never seen a campaign like this for a missing person. Posters of Brianna were everywhere - the casino marquis, in drive-thru windows, on every telephone pole, etc. Search and rescue teams made up of hundreds of volunteers combed the fields closest to campus for weeks hoping to find some trace of Brianna. Reno is still a small town in the sense that everyone seems to know someone you know. We have a friend who owns a car dealership and the police where there (and at every dealership) seeing if anyone tried to get rid of a car fast. One of the parent's in Korey's classroom was telling me her friends ex-husband was turned in as a possible suspect and interviewed. Another parent told me everyone in her husband's office were interviewed. The talk about this case has been constant and everywhere - in the line at the grocery store, on the radio - and of course on the news and in the paper.

This past weekend, Brianna's body was discovered in a field near my home (not the one right at the end of our sreet for those of you who have been here - another field about a mile away). Brianna had been strangled and her body dumped there over a week ago (perhaps longer, they haven't said yet). Until recently, most of the fields had been covered with snow. A man walking during his lunch break discovered her body. It was horrible news.

DNA evidence had linked Brianna's abductor to a serial rapist who has assaulted 2-3 other women on and near campus. They assume the man is local and have a possible description. They think he either lives or works near campus or on our end of town since he dumped her body down here. Women around here are rattled to say the least to know a serial rapist and now murderer is on the loose. Oh - and one of his rape victims told police there was a baby shoe on the floor of his truck - so this guy might be a Dad. They think he blends into the community really well and it's probably someone that family and friends would never imagine would be capable of these crimes. It's beyond creepy...

Brianna's favorite color was blue and today Jeff & I went to a birthday party with the kids and there were blue ribbons everwhere - on car antennas, front doors, light poles. Where Brianna's "missing person" posters had been now show posters with the sketch artist drawing of the potential suspect. The community is outraged and the manhunt has begun.

I wanted to post something about Brianna's story because I hope it reminds everyone to be safe. I can think back on my life (and our lives) and think about many times we made dumb decisions (leaving doors unlocked, walking around in dark neighborhoods, hanging out with boys we didn't know very well, the list goes on). We are all very lucky. In addition, I just hope people don't forget about this young woman who died way too early. My heart goes out to the Denison family. I cannot begin to imagine their pain. I know I will never forget Brianna. For more information about Brianna, go to http://www.briannadenison.com/.

Be safe,
Temple

Karl's brother lives in Reno and has been talking to him about it. I guess he works right by the field they found her in. I just e-mailed the story to Misty since she will be going to Chico in the fall. I just cringe when I think about the time I was walking home from a party in Chico and walked into someones house and passed out on their couch. To think of what could have happened!!!

Kelly that night was one of the many memories that popped into my head when I was thinking about stuff we all did back in the day. Robyn Metcalf & I snuck out of my house in high school one night and walked up to BK and hitched a ride with two strange guys who had Halloween masks on to Lisa Green's house. Stupidist thing I have ever done & that is the one that makes me cringe when I think about it. My Mom had no idea were were gone and if something had happend...ugh. Hey wait a minute...Kelly, I snuck out with you one night too come to think of it! I also think how many nights Sue & I left our doors unlocked when we lived in Chico together.

Several parents have pulled their daughters out of school here. The fear is pretty deep. I drove by the field yesterday as there is a makeshift memorial there. Tons of balloons and teddy bears. There were lots of people. I had to try to explain this to Wyatt - not fun. He keeps asking me about the bad guy now.

That is awful. I heard alot about it when she first went missing and then it subsided. Very sad. Okay - what comes to my mind was the night we slept on Scott Puffer's drive way.

Who left that last comment...and who slept ob Scott Puffer's driveway?! If I was there I have no recollection...

I thought of Kelly's story when I heard this. Drinking definitely makes you do some not so safe stuff for sure. I hope they catch this freak.

I remember people sleeping in scott puffers driveway, but why? I know he woulda let any of us girls in for sure. )

Ok - Puffers house was me, Tab and someone else.....Kelly was it you? Maybe it was Jen H? I just know that we were freezing and some how ended up at Rene Mitchell's house.... Weird...

Another time I remember was in 9th grade - Alysa Mathews, Sue, Jen H (or maybe Kelly) and I got a ride from strange guys at Scandia and went to their apartment. Once there - had a major freak out and luckily they took us back to Scandia.... What the hell? I can't even think of all the times we have had angels watching over us.....

I remeber that Sue. It was me and Tim Coffman, I think she passed out in the back of John Steere's truck, so we proped her up on her porch cause she was filthy drunk and her mom came out and found her after we left.

How stupid that was!

I think nowadays people just get so complacent when it comes to personal safety at home. We’ll have someone walk us out to our cars at night, but leave our doors at home unlocked. We think we live in a safe neighborhood, nothing will ever happen, etc. Just recently in my childhood neighborhood, Ellsworth Circle, one of my former neighbors had her car stolen right out of her garage. She had left the garage open, her car doors unlocked, and the keys in the ignition. I believe she also had her front door unlocked, too. This is a woman living all alone in a big house! Maybe she had gotten too complacent having lived there for eons, and nothing happening yet. I’ve always been vigilant about locking up everything at night and never leaving my purse unattended, because that stuff can happen anywhere, anytime. Learned the hard way too many times in the past when I wasn’t vigilant. Being a true crime book and TV show junkie also helps, heh.

Sue - I can't believe I forgot it was you. I have a polaroid of us from the night at Scandia. We look like we are 12 - we probably were. What a bunch of morons!!!!!BTW - whose parents dropped us off and picked us up? We were in freaking North Highlands...... Nice. (Amy)

That totally reminds me of another time we were all out running amock in the neighborhood and everyone was supposed to be at everyone else's house and somehow we ended up so far from home that we needed a ride and Jay Hicks's dad picked us up in a some parking lot in his wheelchair van - maybe at Sunrise Mall or near Birdcage? Anyone remember that? Sue you seem to be at most of these adventures so I'll laugh if you were with me that time too. What were our parents doing all these times? Were they just at home sleeping? I think Sue's mom was home drinking MY peach melba rum cocktails she confiscated from me...and odds are my mom was at Nino's. Oh - and I just found a diary recently from 1987 that chronicals all kinds of our antics. One night Sue (no suprise there) and I were at Dave Swanson & Ron Falco's houses until 3:00 am - we were 16! Took me a minute to figure out how in the world we pulled that off but we had stayed at my Dad's that night and there was simply no supervision there...which is scary now but was all kinds of convenient back then (smile).

oh my how the memory returns. Okay, so I was there when we dropped Renee Mitchell on her doorstep. I felt bad......for a minute and then slammed another wine cooler.
Now the Jay Hicks pick up, I totally remember that, but I wasn't there - I think.?!
When you all were at Puffer's, where was I - I must have been with Temple....& Tony Beal & the rat pack. yeah - I was probably with Tab's husband partyin!
Yeah - dumb things we did!

This is by far the best blog ever. Where was I during all these events though? I would say making out with Dave Roth, but he was at some of these events. Maybe I was with one of the Stilwells hanging with the Seniors or thumpin in the hooptie. Such fun drunk times. Maybe that is why I can't remember anything.

Now I have this image of Sue making out with Tim Creech in the back of a truck with Renee Mitchell passed out on top of them. Wow. Sue - I so hear you about dreadful memories and unfortunately I have a few of my own - more than I'd like, that's for sure. This particular blog has churned up a few of them and I'll spare those details (and if the rest of in the know can continue to spare those I'd greatly appreciate it). ;)
